Maoists capture civic body, VDCs

DHANKUTA: Cocking a snook at the government, the Unified CPN-Maoist continues to breach the Comprehensive Peace Accord (CPA) and the Interim Constitution, 2007.

The party, which started its second phase of nationwide agitation yesterday, today captured Dhankuta Municipality and VDCs in the name of restoring ‘civilian supremacy.’

Puspa Dhungana led the Maoist cadres’ brazen act.

Urmila Bishwokarma, in-charge, Unified-CPN-Maoist, Dhankuta, confirmed the move, saying their declaration of people’s government in the headquarters of the Eastern Region was in line with the party’s doctrine.

They expelled all the civic body employees from the office as a show of strength even as the police personnel, who were deployed on the municipality premises, were reduced to casual bystanders.

In the new dispensation, Ganesh Bista has been nominated as the chief of the ‘city government’. While, Kabita Rai has been named his deputy.

Bhakta Karki, Harka Subba, Tirtha Singh Rai, Hari

Pradhan, Laxmi Poudel, Surendra Rai, Sanuki Rai and Suman Rai will be the other office-bearers in the Maoists ‘regime’ in the civic body.

An elated Bista said that

the move would pave way for the establishment of the people’s state.

Belahara and Bhirgaon VDCs have also fallen prey to the Maoists.

Krishna Raj Raya and Devendra Rai have been named the chairman and vice-chairman, respectively, in Belahara VDC. Sapsumaya Rai will head Bhirgaon VDC. And Amar Rai will be her deputy.

The Maoists writ now

runs large in Phalante, Ghorlikharka, Pakhribas and Sanne VDCs as well.

Rival parties, civil society members and the public have condemned the Maoists’ “unlawful act”.
