Nominations for second phase of FPTP polls today

Candidates will file nominations for the second phase of provincial and parliamentary first-past-the-post elections at the office of chief returning officers and returning officers of their respective districts tomorrow.
The second phase of provincial and parliamentary elections is scheduled to be held in 45 districts on December 7. There are 128 parliamentary and 256 provincial constituencies in these districts.
Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhi Prasad Yadav said all preparation regarding filing of FPTP nominations had been completed.
Addressing a press conference at the EC’s media centre today, CEC Yadav appealed to all political parties and independent candidates to take part in the nomination process. He hoped that the process would be completed peacefully.
“The government has tightened security, as top leaders of major political parties will file nominations,” said Yadav. He said chief returning officers, returning officers and chief district officers had also been directed to make all logistic arrangements to facilitate the filing of nominations.
Yadav said both the first and the second phases of provincial and parliamentary elections would be held on the stipulated dates.
The second phase of elections will be held in Ilam, Tehrathum, Dhankuta, Udayapur, Jhapa, Morang and Sunsari districts of Province 1; Saptari, Siraha, Dhanusha, Mahottari, Sarlahi, Bara, Parsa and Rautahat districts of Province 2; Sindhuli, Makawanpur, Chitwan, Kavrepalanchowk, Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur district of Province 3; Tanahun, Kaski, Syangja, Parbat and (east of Bardaghat Susta) Nawalparasi districts of Province 4; Palpa, Arghakhanchi, Gulmi, Rupendehi, Kapilvastu, Dang, Pyuthan, Banke, Bardia, (west of Bardaghat Susta) Nawalparasi districts of Province 5; Salyan, Surkhet and Dailekh districts of Province 6; and Kailali, Kanchanpur, Dadeldhura, Achham and Doti districts of Province 7.
The EC said there were 12,198,852 eligible voters in the 45 districts.
The candidates aspiring to contest parliamentary elections need to submit a copy of their citizenship certificate, evidence of being listed in the voter-list, receipt of security deposit and formal letter signed by the party’s authorised person. The nomination letter should contain signatures of the candidate, the proposer and the person who seconds the proposal.
Security deposit for parliamentary and provincial polls has been fixed at Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000, respectively, for each contestant. However, women, Dalits, minorities and financially poor candidates will get 50 per cent rebate on security deposit. .
