School shut after YCL attack
PHIDIM: Buddha Secondary School of Phalaincha VDC in Panchthar district, which was closed following an attack on school teachers by cadres of the Young Communist League a week ago, is yet to reopen.
A team led by Dhan Bahadur Nepali — the YCL’s chief in Phalaincha, had attacked four teachers, including acting headmaster Tek Bahadur Magar, alleging that the teachers took action against Naresh Mangmu of the Maoist student outfit ANNISU-R.
The injured teachers — Bishnu Nepal, Muktinath Adhikary and Rajan Bhattarai, reached the district headquarters today, demanding security. Condition of Magar is reported to be critical.
According to the teachers, on August 27 the YCL activists indiscriminately attacked them alleging that students affiliated with ANNISU-R were beaten up.
The school management committee has written to the DEO resource person, Ganga Kharel, for creating conducive environment for learning in the school. Though an all-party meeting was called yesterday, the injured teachers did not go there. “How could we attend since the Maoists had threatened more violence,” Bishnu Nepal said. The teachers said they would not return to school until authorities assured them of their security.
When contacted, the Maoists’ district leadership expressed ignorance about the incident.
