Scrap state facilities for ex-king: Shrestha

KATHMANDU: Vice chairman of the Unified CPN-Maoist Narayankaji Shrestha ‘Prakash’ on Thursday said that the controversial views expressed by the former king in a recent television interview were a prime example of a counter revolution.

Shrestha, speaking in a face-to-face organised by Reporter’s Club in Kathmandu, said , “The government should deprive former king Gyanendra Shah of all the facilities he has been enjoying from the State and immediately oust him from the Nagarjun Palace since he expressed such views.”

“UCPN-M will take people’s action against Gyanendra if he goes on expressing such views,” Shrestha said, adding, “Since the monarchy was already was consigned to history, there is no chance of its revival in any guise.”

Former king Gyanendra in an exclusive interview with Avenues Television on Wednesday in Janakpur said that monarchy has not been abolished in the country. He said, "I do not think that monarchy has come to an end. This is a hypothetical question." Shah had reached Ram Janaki temple on the occasion of Ram Nawami on Wednesday.

The first meeting of the Constituent Assembly on May 28, 2008 had announced the abolition of 240- year- old monarchy and declared the country a republic. Since then he has been living in Nagarjun palace.
