A new tool
Crime investigation in Nepal is expected to improve with the National Forensic Science Laboratory (NAFOL) introducing Gas Chromo-therapy Mass Spectrometer (GCMS) services for the first time in the country. Though forensic services were available, this new technology will help strengthen the clinical toxicology related testing services by detecting the presence of non-medical drugs or poisonous chemicals or extractions from biological samples. The technology would not only help identify the exact chemical and amount of its presence in samples during criminal investigations but would also improve detection level in complex samples by separating mixtures into individual components and identifying their quantity.
Forensic science has been indispensable to criminal justice system the world over and is used as a significant tool in facilitatating investigations of complex criminal cases, identifying evidence and authenticating them as has been witnessed by its high success in US criminal justice system. Since organised crimes have been on the rise, it just seems the right time for the government to introduce scientific technologies to counter them. This would not only help the government to bring to book the criminals but also dispense due justice to the victims of crimes. However, the introduction of this new technology also needs to be coupled with physical and human resources to handle it effectively. Finally, it is also necessary that the services should be easily accessible.
