At least three people died when landslides buried them at Naugadh Rural Municipality in Darchula last night. Police said two of a family died when their house was buried in a mudslip and another one died in landslide at Chaukhutte of the rural municipality.

According to DSP Manohar Bhatta of Darchula District Police Office, Geuli Thagunna, 72, and her threemonth-old grand daughter Manjari died in the incident.

Similarly, Laxman Sitauli, 29, of the same rural municipality died when he was buried in landslide while heading towards a water mill. Police said their bodies were recovered from the mudslip this morning. Harmati Thagunna, 18, of the rural municipality was injured in the incident, said police. The flood in Khar khola also swept away a second micro hydroelectric project at the same rural municipality.

DSP Bhatta said flood in the rivers caused by incessant rainfall had swept away infrastructure of the hydroelectric project. The flood also swept away suspension bridges, three under-construction bridges, three water mills and three drinking water sources.

DSP Bhatta said a police team had been deployed under the command of a police inspector to rescue people.

The incident site is eight kilometres away from the district headquarters. The police team has been rescuing landslide victims with the help of locals.
