Changing colours

I have always pondered about the origin of boundaries that exist for women and only women. There are of course differences between the two sexes but determining roles and rules on those backgrounds isn’t sensible. In fact, Plato says that roles for women should be decided not on the basis of nurture but their nature and interest. And imposition of restrictions isn’t in women’s interest.

The whole story of male dominance might have come into existence when men protected their counterparts from beasts in earlier times. However, things might have taken an ugly turn and the thought for protection might have been converted into control. In modern times it is competition, ego and need for power that drives men to overpower women.

The fact is men became in charge and enjoyed exercising power often. The funny thing is that the emergence of suppression is a mystery but its follow up is promptly checked and directed.

History shows the society has prioritized males over females. Women have always been regarded as the second sex. The second in rights, duties, work and everything. “The female is a female by virtue of a certain lack of qualities” said Aristotle. That is what the society has set the rigid norm to be. The social dynamics have been neglecting flexibility. The roles can be exchanged or simply shared. Previously women undertook housekeeping due to lack of strength to go hunting. The world now doesn’t run on strength and the brain works in the same magnitude for both men and women.

It is not only the society or the pre-dominant males that serve as foundations for confining females. To a large extent, women are themselves responsible for their plight. If they had given a thought to letting go their role as the other then they would have been in an entirely different picture now. Job divisions would be alike. The trouble has always been the lack of concrete means for organizing themselves into a unit that can stand face to face.

Education plays a crucial role here. Unless women are aware they cannot think of the consequences and, thus, they end up in misery. Furthermore, men should share the world with females as equals. On a brighter note, the world is changing colours. The black in women’s lives is slowly changing to lighter shades of grey. Illiteracy is running out, self consciousness is emerging, people have started using brains and women are getting space.
