Embracing simplicity

It is named  “Moral Value” period in the school I work as a teacher, and I am discoursing on one of the ever lacking elements in modern human life -- simplicity. This once-in-a-week period has always been a breath of fresh air for the primary and lower secondary school kids in my school because they get to listen to anecdotes from around the world and more importantly this is the subject they do not have the obligation of scoring grades in exams. The young minds are filled with awe and inspiration as I go on bringing up series of examples of people who adopted simplicity in their lives and yet were able to make a difference in their endeavors. The examples strike multiple chords with them.

Having been fascinated by the idea of simple life as opposed to a fanciful one, a boy enquires; how come we are able to adopt simplicity in life in the backdrop of everything man-made over and above the present status and trend of human desires? Before starting to zero in on his question, I leave it upon the whole class to define “simple life” and “fanciful life”. Most of them echo the same idea--a simple life has all its aspects simple and a fanciful one is full of glitter and glamor of modernity.

This now paves the way for me to appease the young minds there unconvinced of the notion of simplicity in life. The glitter and glamour might be confusing to our eyes and transitory in nature whereas simplicity in life or anything for that matter appeals to our heart and enables us to unravel any mystery that lies ahead of us. Whatever we seek to know, we ultimately like to bring it down to the simplest form. For instance, we work out a mathematical problem only to bring it to a simplest form of it, which we call the best possible answer to the problem.

A fanciful life or thing, on the other hand, may be alluring at first. But life ultimately boils down to a simple inevitable thing--death. Our human body reaches the simplest of its forms the moment rigor mortis sets in. If simplicity in our life helps us to nurture the feeling of fraternity and helps us to prosper at the same time, it should be the indisputable pursuit of us human above all else. Simplicity in our life is as a result of shunning all vices and malice by us. A fanciful life means the kind of life where a person fails to live his day-to-day life by making Mother Nature part of his being. Living simple keeps us healthy in many ways which a fanciful life, by default, resists.
