IN OTHER WORDS

Wicked war:

A suicide bomber struck yet again in Peshawar, killing four people and injuring another 20. It happened outside a jam-packed stadium as a colourful ceremony to mark the closing of the week-long Inter-Provincial Games and the provincial ministers, including ANP leader and Senior Minister Bashir Ahmad Bilour and Information Minister Iftekhar Hussain, were getting out of the stadium while two of their cabinet colleagues remained inside along with 1200 athletes and some 200 officials.

So far as the enforcement aspect of security is concerned, the police did a good job, stopping the bomber from entering the stadium through the VIP exit gate. Still so many innocent people were killed and injured. A spokesman of the so-called Tehrik-i-Taliban later claimed responsibility for the attack and said the ANP leader was their target. The reason is obvious enough. In fact, a Taliban commander had warned of an attack in Peshawar if security forces did not stop their operation in Fata.

It is plain that security arrangements alone

cannot prevent such heinous acts of terrorism. Our intelligence agencies need to put their act together and focus on bringing to justice the real perpetrators who, to further their own political agendas, train and equip poor and impressionable youth to kill their fellow citizens. — Daily Mail (Pakistan)
