TC needs attention

Many national personalities, including Laxmi Prasad Devkota, were the students of Tri-Chandra College. Even President Ram Baran Yadav studied there. But, the present condition of Tri-Chandra leaves much to be desired. The physical facilities have become worse. Despite space constraints, students are admitted under pressure from student unions. The weak administration has failed to maintain discipline. The college library lacks books and the laboratories lack instruments and skilled instructors. There is an unhealthy competition

between the student wings of different political parties. It is time serious attention was given to making the college regain its old glory.

TU turmoil

It is appalling that the authorities have been turning a deaf ear to the need for ending the turmoil at TU for more than a fortnight. Any pretext for rendering the entire TU completely paralysed cannot be supported. The Tribhuvan University Victims’ Struggle Committee should step back from its unreasonable demands and seek to sort out the grievances, if there are any, through peaceful negotiations rather than resorting to muscle power. And what’s more, it is extremely irresponsible of the government to keep silent instead of taking urgent steps to end the deadlock.

Grudge

This is in reference to ‘Who is a Martyr?’ (THT, Jan. 15). The unnecessary demand of the Maoists to declare their activists martyrs again proves their selfish motive. It is understood that these activists dedicatedly fought for change. Give them a fitting compensation, not the status of a martyr.

Ashamed

These days uncollected garbage has been piling up everywhere in Kathmandu. This makes me feel ashamed as a resident of the metropolis. We pay taxes to the government but it has not acted responsibly in providing the necessary services to the people. I want the authorities concerned to hurry up and clean the city.

Ban them

The decision to ban strikes for six months is welcome. It would be better if all strikes were prohibited for ever. The world has witnessed an unprecedented economic crisis. Trade unions are part of the capitalist past. The world economic systems must change and trade unions of the past must vanish from the economic system of the future.

Intelligent use of robotics in the production mechanisms would prove the irrelevancy of the trade unions. The constitution of New Nepal should guarantee employment and ban all trade unions.

Urgency

The government has done the right thing by declaring journalist Uma Singh a

martyr and providing compensation. Now, the urgent need is to find the murderers and award them severe punishment for their heinous crime. Criminals must be deterred from

making journalists the target of their attacks.
