Congress unification
The twin pressing issues of holding free and fair elections and uniting the two Congress parties seem to be mostly occupying Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala. Since the leftist
parties are also considering the possibility of their unity, a new political polarisation may be emerging between democrats and republicans. But Koirala is right to call for the unification of the NC and NC (D). A divided NC and the resulting confusion during the transition period may not be good for the CA polls.

Youth power
This is a clarion call to all serious-minded youths to unite for the common cause of the country as only they can free Nepal from a host of maladies that afflict it right now. Indiscipline has taken root in every sector. Norms of good governance are being openly flouted.
Corrupt people are also getting lucrative appointments. Thus the youth need to effect positive and far-reaching social transformation by directing their power to ensure that undisciplined, corrupt and criminal-minded people do not stay in government. But first, they themselves should be disciplined and serious.

Misguided
The vandalisation of statues of Shah kings by YCL cadres cannot be justified. I cannot understand how the country will benefit in anyway by the destruction of our national heritage. The vandalisation of our national treasures was certainly not a mandate of Jana Andolan II.
Shiva Neupane and Upasana Dahal, RR Campus Snake bites With the onset of the monsoon, the common problem of snake bites will soon resurface in the Tarai. Many people lose their lives to snake bites for lack of antidotes at local hospitals and health centres. The Ministry of Health should be prepared for a sharp increase in the number of snake bites during the
monsoon by stocking adequate supply of antidotes.

Learn
This is in reference to Sushil Regmi’s Midway article “Hard lesson” (THT, May 18). He shows a positive attitude by choosing to embark on a new life despite being denied a US visa. This should be a lesson to all youngsters who have been denied a visa by the American embassy to start their their lives anew.

Wrong move
I was shocked at the inhuman treatment of senior retired citizens collecting their pension cheques from the New Road branch of Nepal Bank Ltd. The pension section has been shifted from the ground floor to a higher floor. I noticed some of the elderly were having a lot of trouble climbing the stairs. Moreover, the plastic-covered roof makes the place extremely hot. There are no chairs for the senior citizens there, either. There is a genuine risk of dehydration and other medical problems. The elderly do not deserve such treatment. I urge the NBL authorities to look into the matter immediately.
