No time to waste

Whatever Prime Minister Koirala says during his stay in his hometown is believed to be very important. During his latest Biratnagar sojourn, he said that Nepal is already 80 per cent republic. This implies that there is still one in five chance of a “bright future” for the King.

At this critical juncture when people are confused about whether the country needs to be declared a republic first or go for CA polls first, it is incumbent on the eight-party alliance to guide them. When the unity among EPA constituents becomes weak on this issue, nefarious elements may raise their heads. Hence, no time should be wasted either in declaring Nepal a republic or in announcing a fresh poll date.

Bitter truth

Recently, I visited some remote places in Kapilvastu district. Some of the people I talked to there were totally ignorant about Nepali politics. I wonder how CA polls can be held at a time when many Nepalis have no idea what the CA means.

On the other hand, Maoist chairman Prachanda has been drumming up support for a republic, claiming that most Nepalis want the same. The truth of the matter is that there are people in Nepal who have little idea of politics, let alone a republic.

Palista Kharel’s Midway

article “Sworn enemies” (THT, May 11) highlights two things — first, it is impossible to understand a woman and secondly, a woman is the worst enemy of a woman. I take exception to these statements. First, if a man does not understand a woman it is because he has a low emotional quotient. Women have never complained about not understanding other women. In fact, a woman’s best friend is always a woman. It is an accepted truth that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. Mars is the God of War and Venus is the

Goddess of Love. Is it any wonder then that men find it difficult to understand women? The writer should answer a simple question: Why aren’t there any male teachers in nursery and kindergarten schools? When the writer says that a woman is a woman’s worst enemy, it seems that she is still living in the Garden of Eden. It will take a progressive mind to understand a woman.

Social ties

This refers to Uday Lama’s Midway article “Social standing” (THT, May 15). It is true that an individual’s standing determines his contribution to the society. But this is not the only

yardstick to evaluate how much contribution an individual makes to the society. I also doubt if the writer applies his saying to his own social life. Times have changed. People don’t even have enough time to communicate with their neighbours. Nonetheless, even if they cannot contribute actively to the society, they can raise their voices in order to bring about the desired changes.

Add letters

As a regular reader of THT, I suggest you allot more space for the “Letters” column. Letters give a sense of immediacy to the readers and make them feel a part of the broader society. They also serve as a mirror of a newspaper’s success.
