LETTERS
Settle the differences :
This refers to the report “Govt conspiring to make King active again: Prachanda” (THT, August 14). I thought the major difference between the government and the Maoists was settled when the two sides agreed to send letters with the same content to the UN. But Prachanda’s latest statement shows that the two sides continue to harbour mutual suspicions.
Prachanda does have a point. Why cannot the Prime Minister give up his obsession with ‘ceremonial monarchy’ and go for a republic straightaway? Can’t the Maoists be a little more flexible on the arms issue? Both the sides should be serious about implementing the agreements and working for the benefit of the nation.

Mob rule :
Every day we hear of robberies, extortions, kidnappings, killings, strikes and traffic disruptions. What good are laws if they cannot be enforced? The traffic police are doing almost nothing to book traffic violators. The tendency of even a small crowd of people to block traffic in order to make their grievances known continues unabated.
The mob seems to be virtually ruling the country. The incident of a minibus overrunning a bicycle at New Baneshwor recently illustrates my point. The mob torched the minibus and the driver had to run for cover. The incidents at the Everest Nursing Home and Lumbini Hospital in the recent past are other examples. If the government does nothing about the problem right now, it will not be long before the public may be forced to arm themselves in self-defence.

Ray of hope :
I’m sure the upcoming constituent assembly elections will represent the true will of all Nepalis. The elections may be expected to brighten the outlook for education, peace and
freedom for all the ethnic groups in the country. The Nepalis can certainly look forward to a bright future if all the Nepalis unite and proceed with good intentions.

Frustrating :
The delay in progress towards constituent assembly has frustrated all Nepalis. The April revolution had heralded a new beginning but things are not moving in that direction now. The activities of the political parties are gradually forcing the people to see the need for another revolution. And what does PM Koirala mean by giving “space” to the King?

Unreliable :
This refers to Nepal Telecom’s disturbed mobile phone network. Nepal Telecom had notified about upgrading its software, which was expected to affect the services on Thursday and Friday last but the situation has not improved as yet. When can the customers rely on the
company’s services?

Bad roads :
The dilapidated condition of roads in the capital has caused much inconvenience. The stretch of Ring Road near Dhumbarahi is full of potholes. Are all employees of the Department of Roads on mass leave? If not, what are they doing?
