Don’t spoil heritage sites :
The civil society and political bodies should refrain from holding political gatherings at religious and historical sites like Kathmandu Durbar Square and thus help keep their sanctity intact. Besides causing great inconvenience to foreign tourists, such programmes could damage the artworks. It would be much better if mass gatherings were held at Ratna Park, which, besides being spacious, is easily accessible to most of the Valley residents.

Mind games :
As soon as PM Koirala spoke in favour of ceremonial monarchy, Maoist leader Baburam Bhattarai fired back a vehement rebuttal. PM’s statements, Bhattarai said, could derail the peace process. But these squabbles are only political manoeuvrings which should not jeopardise the peace process. Besides, people will decide the fate of the monarchy, not the parties.

End it :
It was not long ago that the nation was on a high as the people’s sacrifices seemed to have borne fruit. But a hundred days on, we are back to square one. The government has been too slow to make progress on crucial business. The PM’s offbeat remarks have tended to make the situation more volatile. Reports that a lot of cash has changed hands in recent promotions and appointments in government and public corporations tend to mock the people’s aspirations.
While capable civil servants have been left out, those with political connections are getting important posts. Some of the most corrupt people are getting on well in the bureaucracy. Money and influence-peddling seem to carry more weight than merit. This must end.

Irrelevant :
This refers to the news “Koirala directs secys to frame position papers” (THT, August 13). Isn’t it premature to envision 10-year position papers now? Does the PM and the NC expect to stay in power for that long to ensure that all programmes are implemented? Does this government have the right to make such decisions?
Long-term plans and the future of the monarchy should be left to the people’s epresentatives. The PM’s job is to ensure that the interim government is formed soon to conduct the CA elections.

This refers to the news “Koirala directs secys to frame position papers” (THT, August 13). This is a timely move. People’s wishes will be fulfilled only when long-term policies are made and executed.

Fallout :
Regarding the report “Dramatic rise in divorce cases” (THT, August 10), it is shocking that people in Mahottari are resorting to divorce just to get a share of the land. The government must reconsider the fallout of imposing a ceiling on land holdings. This also stresses the risk that even a sound policy may carry if it is not backed up with adequate homewok.
