On a collision course:

The government and the Maoists seem to be on a collision course. While PM Koirala emphasises the need to disarm the Maoists prior to the Constituent Assembly elections, the Maoists are insisting on the earlier agreements with the seven-party alliance on arms management. They have also made it clear that they will not ‘disarm’ before the CA decides on the fate of the Maoist militia and the Nepal Army. Compromise and concessions are necessary to prevent the country from slipping back to conflict. People want peace and

stability. Therefore, both the sides should respect the popular wishes.

Exemplary :

The Philippines-based award-giving foundation has honoured all Nepalis by choosing Dr Sanduk Ruit for the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay award. Dr Ruit has worked tirelessly to help cataract patients, not only in Nepal but also in other countries. He is a great example of how persistence and hard work pays off in the long run. We Nepalis have a lot to learn from the rags-to-riches tale. As the country is embroiled in political uncertainty, this news came as a whiff of fresh air. Congratulations to Dr Ruit on his great achievement.

Defiance :

Army personnel have flagrantly abused power and ignored government orders in recent days. Though the government has pledged to take action, nothing has happened so far. It looks on helplessly as the army top brass continues to defy the Rayamajhi Commission orders. Yes, the MPs are making plenty of noise in the House, but it is having no impact. The government should demonstrate courage to take strict action against these people.

Inspiring :

This refers to Deepa Bhatta’s Midway piece “The roaring forties” (THT, July 31). I would like to thank her for helping me shed negative feelings with her positive outlook on life after 40. By prompting me to look at the brighter side of things, she has also strengthened my resolve. More such articles are expected from the writer.

Royal photo :

It was most thoughtful of THT to greet Navayubaraj Hridayendra on his fifth birthday by publishing his cute picture on the front page of the July 30 issue. No other daily bothered to felicitate him. Why should the little child have to atone for the sins of his elders, especially as we are yet to decide the fate of the monarchy? We have every right to hate the people responsible for tarnishing the image of the monarchy, but let us not hate the institution itself.

Weather :

The mercury seems to be rising by the day in the capital. The scorching heat makes it impossible for people to venture out during daytime. The heat has become worse because there has been little rain in the past few days. Is there any scientific explanation for this? If there is, THT should inform its readers of the causes of this heat wave. Does the weather pattern here have any connection with the rains in India?
