Pretentious behaviour
Ajit N S Thapa’s sermon to the King to honour the wishes of the people (THT, Feb 7) is far too presumptuous and irresponsible for the simple fact that the former happens to be a politician himself of a party that just unanimously re-elected its leader in absentia, otherwise indicted and incarcerated by the RCCC.
Thapa should recall that corrupt politicians ruined Nepali democracy paving the way for dislocation of peace and they now want to win power with the help of foreign support. In order to rehabilitate democracy, the parties must wear a new look, his own included, by getting rid of corrupt elements. The members at the lower echelons owe this to the people and the country, including Thapa. Failing to do so, they should learn to keep their mouths shut and not pretend to speak for the people. They must not complain of snow in the neighbour’s roof when their own doorstep is odiously unclean.

Damage
It is unfortunate that the Maoists set off a bomb at the bridge over the Tinau river at the Mahendra Highway on February 8, causing severe damage to the infrastructure. Thanks to the rebels, there is now a big hole in the bridge, which used to join Butwal with Mahendranagar; so much so for the Maoists’ ‘patriotism drama.’By resorting to such activities, the Maoists are only hurting the poor people, who will now have to bear the inconvenience of having to do without the bridge. Nepal has poor infrastructure, and on top of it, if the Maoists keep on destroying whatever little public structures we have, there would be nothing left in the country soon.

Wasted effort
The government put all its might together to show that the municipal election was a success. But the people’s participation was very low. The candidates, too, were hopeless and the whole election process seemed only to save the government’s face.
The increasing national and international pressure should be enough for the King to understand the futility of the recently held polls. Besides, the election was a big waste of the state’s valuable financial resources.

Don’t preach
I read with interest the Midway article “Duty and beauty” published in THT on February 8. The writer’s opinion that women concentrate more on their looks and care less about increasing their knowledge is quite right. However, I was not at all impressed by his writing style. It seemed more like parents lecturing their teenage daughters. The writer must drop his ‘preaching’ style.

Request
I am a regular watcher of Europe’s Champions League and I am happy that THT has given a good coverage of the Chelsea-Barcelona clash in previous years. Your paper included all the contents of that match including previews. So this year too I request you to print the preview of all the matches for the benefit of sports fans like me.
