Shameful assault:

We were shocked to hear about the assault against Kantipur FM. This sort of attack on the media shows the real face of the present government. The raid and seizure of the FM station’s equipment will be counter-productive to the government itself, as it goes against the people’s right to information. It is no doubt a shameful act. It will isolate the government from the people further. The government must stop such assaults on freedom of the press. It should adopt sober ways of handling problems. The authorities should know that in a country like Nepal where maximum people rely on the radio for getting information and news, it would be against public interest to stop the FM stations from broadcasting news.

Bird flu:

Badri Raj Pande’s article “Nepal should take steps to avoid bird flu” (THT, October 24) was a relevant one. Bird flu is a real threat confronting all of us. The author advised the authorities concerned either to keep vigil to combat the H5N1 pandemic or to risk a considerable loss of lives. The government must promptly implement the precautionary measures suggested by Dr Pande if it wants to mitigate the threat of bird flu. By nature, an epidemic never rings the bell to announce its arrival. But when it comes, it wreaks devastation. Therefore, when there’s no remedy as such, the best or probably the only option is to minimise the hazard. The government should take all necessary precautionary measures soon.

Interesting:

The Midway “Meaning of friendship” by Neelam Kumar Dhungal published in THT on October 20 was interesting. The writing that showed the true meaning of the adage “A friend in need is a friend indeed” impressed me. People may have many problems, which they cannot share with their parents all the time. But they can always confide such secrets to a true friend. It is also true that a friend may often play the role of a guardian, comrade and teacher. A true friend not only shares our joys but also is there in our difficult hour.

Cartoon:

I appreciate your newspaper a lot. I am an admirer of the cartoon section, especially the BLONDIE and the horrible HAGAR. I am also addicted to the horoscope column as I don’t start my day without reading it. However, what I think lacking in THT is a cartoon corner on the front page shedding light on recent socio-political affairs. A piece of art would make the front page interesting. I also think the majority of your readers are youngsters who would surely like to see such a cartoon corner.

Strikes:

Some six months ago a friend told me how he came across a foreigner who thought Nepal was a huge country since it took more than one month for him to travel from Mechi to Mahakali. Actually it was due to the frequent bandhs that had made his journey long. Why don’t the demonstrators find other ways of making their demands than making our lives difficult all the time?
