Poultry products
Through news reports I have learnt that the sale of eggs and chicken meat has
increased. This is good news both for the poultry farmers and consumers. To check the spread of bird flu in the country, after it was first detected in Jhapa, the government and the
technical team deputed for the purpose must be thanked. It has also assured the people that the poultry in the country have not been affected by the disease. But, care and vigilance has to be maintained at the highest level so that detection can be made in time.

Outage
Apropos of the new item “Outage hits forensic lab work” (THT, Feb 9), it is a sad state of affairs that such an important institution as the National Forensic Science Laboratory is not able to work to full capacity because of the extended load shedding schedule.
Arrangements should have been made for a backup power system so that the laboratory could carry out its tasks many of which have great importance like the testing of spurious liquor or adulteration in edibles.

Still stinky
Despite the regular collection and disposal of the city garbage for the past two weeks, the pedestrians still have to walk carefully as the streets still retain a dirty appearance. With summer, diseases are bound to spread. Can’t the metropolitan authorities keep the metropolis sparkling clean by making the inhabitants themselves participants in the clean-up drive?

Narrow
This is in reference to the news report “Tharuwan strike extended till today” (THT, Feb 9). Bandhs and strikes have become the common way of life. All the more so in the Tarai where political groups with different hues have emerged recently. It is however sad that almost all these groups follow the same modus operandi of violence and terror, which ultimately makes the common people suffer. It is a fact that regular bandhs affect people from all walks of life and spoil an environment where everyone can work freely to earn their livelihoods. Nepal is straggling far behind many other economies as a result of political instability. It is now time for us to shed our vested interests to the larger interest of the nation. Only then can we aspire to build a peaceful and prosperous Nepal.

Clever
Apropos of the news report “Govt open to suggestions to address power outage woes” (THT, Feb 9), it is a welcome distraction from the approach that previous governments took to address a particular problem. In fact, the Maoist-led government has been receptive to the “positive and constructive comments” from the common masses, especially when it is faced with a major difficulty. Whether the comments are well heeded is a different question though. On the other hand, the ploy helps to momentarily distract the public from their woes and makes them feel important.
Hats off to the government for devising this clever idea!
