LETTERS: Durbar and slaves

Apropos of the news “Bagh Durbar being decorated to welcome new mayor of KMC”. (THT, Page 3, May 20) the news points to the fawning, slave mentality of our proud public servants. KMC employees who have no time to talk to the real masters in the democracy, the members of the public seeking solutions to their needs are working round the clock to decorate the building at a cost of 2 million rupees to welcome the people’s representatives. Nothing could be more farcical than this, which seems to have been lifted straight from the pages of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s description of Latin American democracies in the 1960s. And what about the Durbar office? It is hard to believe that we are still using the Durbar built by a highly celebrated Shah warrior, Amar Singh Thapa, in the late 1700s, almost 200 plus years ago. What offices have been built in the last 25 years to celebrate the Maoist war and the onset of republican democracy? Are we still going to be proud of our achievements sitting in the offices built by Shahs and Mallas before them.

Foul play

This is with reference to the news story “Tikapur carnage victims cry foul” (THT, May 20, Page 1). How can the government forgive the murderers of the Tikapur incident? If the person who burnt a policeman alive who was on duty is free, then how can we trust our government’s justice? Regarding Chief Justice Sushila Karki’s case also, the government did injustice by interfering with the independent judiciary. By doing such things, is the government trying to prove that it can do as it wishes? If not, then the public have a right to an adequate explanation from the

government as to why the innocent victims are getting injustice? The government cannot upset the general public by behaving irresponsibly. It must maintain the rule of law. The government must give justice and security to every Nepali.

Miss Nepal

Kathmandu is going to hold the Miss Nepal beauty pageant. Altogether 19 contestants are there vying for this prestigious crown but just one of the contestants can win this title. To be honest, all of them are talented as well as commanding by nature. Well, there are people who are really against such competitions because they think females are exploited in the name of making them popular throughout the country. Because of this, they are always in the mood of staging protests against such events. However, beauty pageants offer

opportunity for girls who participate as these would help them enhance their personality and fame, boost their confidence, and bring in more income for them so that they can move on to higher things in life in years to come.
