Let us hope that  Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba was serious while claiming that his party is the only one that will be able to amend the constitution in order to fulfill the demands of Madhesi people.

He claimed this recently during a gathering at Majhgawa of Rupendehi “Constitution will be amended: PM Deuba (THT, October 3, Page 5).

It was not surprising to hear this from other leaders of the ruling parties in the past also. But, that could not happen due to the UML’s political stance. If the UML continues not to budge from its stance, how can the PM fulfill his promise which is yet to be seen.

He must have some political tricks to play with. Otherwise, what motivated him to publicly announce that the constitution will be amended considering that the outcome of previous amendment efforts had failed?

On the other hand, the UML and CPN-MC are talking about political alliances during the forthcoming provincial and federal election scheduled for November and December. What kind of political game is this which must have shocked the NC leaders? It is said that there is nothing “impossible in politics”.

This shows that the senior leaders, in any way, do not want to let the power go out of their hand. Otherwise, it could have been a litmus test for them had they decided to fight the elections on their own way. Having said this, time has come for them to play fair and win the hearts of the people through the ballot papers.

The upcoming elections will definitely measure the political weight of the senior leaders of major political parties which will delineate their future political course.

It is also not uncommon to see leaders of different parties switching from their mother parties to other parties for the sake of their political benefits. Hridayadesh Tripathi and other four Madheshi leaders from RJP-N have decided to contest the polls with the UML’s election symbol.

They do not mind to be the laughing stock for their political gains. “Tripathi, four Madhesi leaders to contest polls with CPN-UML’s election symbol” (THT, October 3, Page 1).

Is this a political blow to the RJP-N? Does it indicate that the Madhesi parties’ demands have started going down the drain? Does it show that Tripathi and other four leaders have left aside the Madhesi people’s agenda?

Is it a political ploy to weaken the RJP-N?

Apropos of the news story “50 dead, more than 400 hurt” (THT, October 3, Page 1), the fatality and the wounded have risen to make this the biggest mass murder in the US history.

We offer our heartfelt condolences to the families of the dead and pray to the Almighty for peace to the departed souls and for speedy recovery of the wounded.

We stand with the American people in this hour of great tragedy.

Although president Donald Trump has termed the killing as “pure evil” it is the gun culture that always creates fear in society.
