Madhes agitation

It is better for the agitating parties to shun violence, stop obstructing the border, and avoid disturbing general life and targeting public transport. Both the government and the agitating side should now engage in meaningful dialogues to find a negotiated settlement

It is a common fact to conduct agitation if anybody or any group’s demand is not fulfilled by the state or nation. At present, the Madhesi people are in agitation for fulfillment of their demands. The agitation launched by the Madhesi people is the agitation of the Nepali people and the genuine issues raised by those agitating groups should be addressed as soon as possible.   The Madesh revolt is not only the dissatisfaction of particular groups or people rather it is a matter of national feeling and unification. The long term agitation or revolt is not good for the sake of the nation. If the long and persistent conflict remains Nepal cannot move ahead. Moreover, this agitation launched by the Madhesi parties is an internal matter of Nepal and people of other countries should not be involved in any political activities that will affect the relations between the two countries.

There are no issues that cannot be resolved through dialogues or talks. Now the decision made by the agitating group to run away from the talk table citing minor issues is unfortunate. The Government should be ready for open discussion on all real issues raised by the revolting groups. Not only that, the ruling parties should also be prepared for concrete and meaningful talks to present them in before the Madhesi parties regarding their demand of the boundaries and other major issues. Meanwhile, the high level political mechanism should be formed and seriously think about the on-going Madhes movement. The government should follow the democratic path and be ready to take immediate steps to resolve the crisis.

The ongoing and prolonged Madhes agitation has adversely affected the all round life of the Nepalese people. There is going to be a humanitarian crisis due to scarcity of essential commodities, including petroleum products, essential drugs and foodstuff. The industries and manufacturing sectors have suffered and incurred huge economic loss due to the unavailability of raw materials to be imported from India and third countries. Many workers of the industries are unemployed and facing the hand to mouth problem. Similarly, the farmers are in a crunch of essential fertilizers and also bearing huge loses. The developmental activities of the nation have stopped completely. In the same way, the unavailability of essential medicine has increased the death rate in the country. At the same time, the school and colleges of Terai region are closed, and many students are deprived of getting the light of the education. This situation will create prolonged negative effects, and the result of this situation is unimaginable. Keeping in mind the seriousness of the situation, the government should take rapid action for the smooth and ease supply of essential goods in the country. Meanwhile, the agitating parties should not be irresponsible as they seem to be by blocking everything from reaching the country. This kind of situation must come to an end immediately.

The ruling parties should spare nothing to deal only with mathematical calculation of holding the major government posts but rather with the most pressing challenges successfully without losing the long–term view. There is the need of much ground work to be done by the present ruling government to be able to carry out the constitution in all its aspects. The constitution has to be fully implemented in a political sense only if it will be able to hold the election at the central, provincial and local level. Some segments of society and outsiders feel dissatisfied with the constitution with some of its provisions or lack of them in the new constitution. As a result some of the parties are in agitation, and bringing them on to the political mainstream is an urgent need.

India and Nepal are neighboring countries. The present need of the government is to make a respectful relation and balance with both the countries. The government should deal with the neighboring country only after resolving the Madhes agitation. In the same time, the common nationality of Pahad and Madhesh is the necessity of the present day. All the work in this regard needs to be speeded up as far as possible, with positive hope, trust, and friendly behavior. For that the government should not be narrow minded and rigid.

Now it is very important for the present ruling government to create an environment for bringing back the agitating parties to the negotiating table and reach an amicable settlement of political transition with happy results. For that the government should create a conducive environment to facilitate the agitating parties to return to the political mainstream and get involved in full and right implementation of the newly formed constitution.

Moreover, it is better for the agitating parties to shun violence, stop obstructing the border, and avoid disturbing general life and targeting public transport. Both the government and the agitating side should now engage in meaningful dialogues to find a negotiated settlement. This decisive talk will be possible for resolving the issues if the government and the agitating parties come in a middle path that would be agreeable to both sides, without creating a situation in which outsiders or third parties do not interfere in the internal issues.
