MIDWAY : A bucket of water
Rajan Raj Acharya
Having to live with water crisis in Nepal every day, I found myself knocking at the heaven’s door in my dream begging for a bucket of water. A voice from inside ordered me to come round the rear entrance. I thought that he had asked me to come to the back entrance because he wanted something in return (like the under table system that exists in our country), but I realised that they normally used that fjord for the newcomers. When I revealed my motive behind coming to heaven, everybody started laughing at me. I turned pale and was soaked in sweat. Even though I was from the second richest country in water resource yet I had to come to ask for a bucket of water. I told them that I had not seen enough water since long and they might have mistaken the blood stream for water. The big voice then asked me how my basic needs were fulfilled when water is scarce? I explained to him that other things could easily be met from the huge foreign aids. But we cannot get water from other countries.
“What about peace in your country?” he further asked. I replied that peace has been destroyed by the selfishness of the rulers a long time back. Here I lost my patients. ‘Just give me a bucket of water, will you?’ I raised my voice. ‘I want to quench my thirst and I have come a long way for it.’ Turning a deaf year to my request, the voice again asked me, “who would look after the nation if every one was busy quenching their thirst?” ‘I do not know,’ I rep-lied at which he called me an idiot and a selfish being. “You can surely work a bit harder and bring about peace and development in your country, then you won’t have to come here begging for water,” he said. ‘Longer he stays here more harmful and disastrous he could be for the peace of the heaven,’ said the head of the department and then furiously ordered his followers to put me thro-ugh extreme torture and execute me as soon as possible. That bucket of water nearly cost me my life. It was not my fault for I was habitually driven. When I woke up, I realised what havoc a bucket of water could have wreaked. I will never go knocking on the heaven’s door again. No, not even in my wildest dream, no matter even if I die of dehydration.
