MIDWAY : Point to ponder

Shubhechha Subedi

It was a cold rainy day. Five of us friends were sipping coffee inside a warm cosy room. We were discussing a very interesting topic. It was a cel-ebrity talk that the girls’ group was dissecting. It started after someone reminded us if we had watched a television talk show. “Hey! Did you see the show? It was brilliant.” Few said yes and others said no. We were taking about the episode of the show featuring our favourite anchor.

The best part is that we all know her. And the sad part is — she doesn’t! We’re just five out of millions of those who say, “She’s my source of inspiration,” whenever they see her on television. For the ones who missed the show we were explaining what it was all about. It was really good to learn something nice and tell your friends about it. That talk was really important to the five heads who thought they were ugly heads. Had we not seen the show then, we would never have been able to correct ourselves. We were wrong, we were never ugly, but lazy heads. Before this, we would come up with such issues as our weight, height, hairdo, dresses, failure, mistakes and all silly and superfluous topics to ponder and pout about. About how not perfect we were! And how ugly we looked and how dissatisfied we were about the way we looked.

It would now be redundant to say that I scoff at the mere thought of how different a perspective I had a few days ago about myself. How a small thing can change the way we think? I can only look back in awe at myself.

We never knew we were beautiful. We never really thanked God for making us look different, giving us our own identity until we saw that particular episode where she said, “There are no ugly people, only lazy ones.”

We thought about it. She was right. We never cared enough to be what we could be, but just remained passive and stayed what we thought we were. We never realised the importance of self-love and presentation. She was right we all are special and one single piece in the whole world. No one can look exactly the way you do until you get a clone.

No one can act the way you do until you get a mimic. We all are given a beautiful body and soul. Learn to worship the God in you. These days, whenever I get a glimpse of my reflection I say, “I’m not ugly; I’m just a little lazy.” A single episode of that television show instilled in me the perspective to view myself through a different lens. I now know it’s not always about perfection; it’s about trying to become perfect. And believing that I am beautiful. And so are you!
