Nationality redefined

The existence of Nepal as a nation has given us an identity and a sense of belonging. In other words, it has provided us with some shared features and assets making us distinct from others. Generally we see a nation within a well governed territory with well defined frontiers. However, a nation transcends the geographical boundaries and survives even in an alien land.

Nepali nationality is not confined within the narrow or limited area occupied by Nepal. From another perspective Nepali nationality many not exist in every nook and corner of Nepal. Lack of patriotism and blind adherence to imported cultures and values cause the degeneration and degradation of tangible and intangible cultural heritages leading to erosion of our identity. Nationality is more or less associated with national culture and our national culture reflects our identity. There are usually confusions about the concept of nation and state. It is said that state needs territory, government and more or less a degree of sovereignty to exist. Government including the legislative, the executive and the judiciary, market and civil society are taken as the integral components of a state. However love and care of a homeland, patriotism, affinity with the root and emotional attachment with the natives reflect the nationality of the people inside or away from the country.

People staying far from their country are heard saying that the love of their original homeland grows deeper in their heart because they miss everything within the country. Owing to their stay in a different geography with a different values system, culture and way of life they feel dislocated and sense the crisis of identity. Patriotic impulse motivates them to maintain a higher level of cultural integrity to live as true Nepalese. They feel things connected with the homeland dear and near to them. Nationality dwells and thrives there by virtue of their concern towards the nation.

There is a need to redefine nationality in this age of globalization. The national frontiers have become thinner and weaker owing to information and communication technology and heavy influx of people across the frontiers. Traditional, rigid, self centered and confined nationality should be replaced by a more global, flexible and harmonious nationality coexistent with many other nationalities.

Also we now accept the multiple centers, philosophies and practices of nationalities.
