KATHMANDU, JULY 3

Nepal Forum of Science Journalists (NFSJ) successfully organized the third episode of 'Meet the Scientist', focusing on Mountain Climate and Science Journalism in Nepal. The event featured Dr. D.B Kattel from Chinese Academy of Sciences as the esteemed speaker, who shed light on crucial aspects of this topic.

Dr. Kattel emphasized the significant challenges faced by high mountain regions and their inhabitants due to global warming and climate change. ''The Tibetan Plateau region as a key driver of monsoon patterns in the South Asia, illustrating its impact on the global climate system. Even minor changes in the hydrological system could have profound global consequences,'' Dr. Kattel highlighted.

The collaboration of scientists from various countries within the Chinese Academy of Sciences was highlighted as they work together to address these pressing issues. ''400 scientists from 30 countries who are collectively working on climate change and its impact in the region under the Chinese Academy of Sciences,'' he Said. Dr. Kattel also attributed climate change problems primarily to the actions of developed countries. He elaborated on the rise in minimum temperatures due to global warming and the anthropogenic factors leading to an increase in maximum temperatures, particularly in the southern regions.

Dr. Kattel stressed the need for further research in this field and shared a study that revealed systematic differences in glaciers in the different part of the mountain region in the recent years. Additionally, he underscored the importance of Science Communication in a developing country like Nepal to bridge the gap between scientists and society. Dr. Kattel had worked over two decades as a science writer in Nepal.

Chhatra Karki, the Founding President of NFSJ and Program Director, expressed gratitude to Dr. Kattel for his insightful presentation on Mountain Climate and its impact on daily life. The program received active participation from esteemed individuals within the NFSJ leadership. President Rajan Pokhrel, NFSJ Advisor Rajendra Khanal, Vice President Madhusudhan Guragain, and Secretary Gobinda Pokharel were all actively involved in the event. Their valuable contributions and involvement added depth and significance to the program, further enhancing its success.

The event witnessed the participation of NFSJ members, senior Journalists, Editors, researchers and science students.
