Arsenal win, finish season fourth

London, May 8 :

Thierry Henry scored a hat trick for Arsenal in the team’s final match at Highbury, beating Wigan 4-2 on Sunday to capture fourth place in the English Premier League.

The victory meant that the Gunners moved ahead of Tottenham, ending the team’s hopes of debut spot in the Champions League next season. Tottenham lost 2-1 at West Ham on the final day of the season.

Manchester United finished second behind Chelsea after outplaying Charlton 4-0. Louis Saha, Cristiano Ronaldo and Jason Euell’s own-goal meant the game was virtually all over by the 35th minute. Kieron Richardson then added a fourth in the 58th minute. Liverpool finished in third place.

Chelsea ended its season with a 1-0 loss at Newcastle. Magpies defender Titus Bramble scored the only goal of the game as Newcastle finished seventh.

Chelsea finished with 91 points, followed by Manchester United with 83 and Liverpool with 82. Arsenal finished with 67 points, two more than Tottenham.

Also Sunday, Aston Villa edged Sunderland 2-1, Blackburn beat Manchester City 2-0, Bolton downed Birmingham 1-0, Everton drew 2-2 with West Bromwich Albion and Fulham edged UEFA Cup finalist Middlesbrough 1-0.

Spanish La Liga

MADRID: Zinedine Zidane scored in the 67th minute of his final home appearance for Real Madrid on Sunday in his team’s 3-3 draw with Villarreal in the Spanish league.

Zidane sent in a looping header from David Beckham’s cross for Madrid’s second goal at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

Madrid’s draw lifted it into second place, one point above Valencia with one match remaining. Both teams are aiming to finish second and earn a direct place in the Champions League.

Madrid took the lead when Julio Baptista scored in the 23rd-minute. Villarreal leveled after an own-goal by Alvaro Mejia eight minutes later, and then took the lead with Diego Forlan’s angled volley in the 39th. Forlan scored another in the 86th from the penalty spot after defender Sergio Ramos had handled Javi Venta’s shot and was ejected. Baptista scored the equaliser in the 88th minute with a header from Beckham’s free kick.

Also on Sunday, it was: Racing Santander 2, Osasuna 1; Getafe 3, Cadiz 1; Real Sociedad 2, Celta Vigo 2; Real Betis 2, Mallorca 1; and Zaragoza 3, Alaves 0. Champion Barcelona has 82 points, while Madrid has 70 and Valencia 69. Osasuna has 65 points, followed by Sevilla with 62 and Celta with 61.
