Australia ride on Lee’s hat-trick
Cape Town, September 16:
Fast bowler Brett Lee took the first hat-trick in 20-overs internationals as Australia crushed Bangladesh by nine wickets in their ICC Twenty20 World Championships Super Eight match on Sunday.
Bangladesh were restricted to 123-9 after being sent in to bat. Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden hammered a quickfire opening partnership as Australia won with 6.1 overs to spare.
The Bangladeshis were struggling at 103-3 after 16 overs when Lee came on for his second spell. Lee had Shakib al Hasan (16) caught behind and bowled Mashrafe Mortaza by a slow yorker before completing a hat trick trapping Alok Kapali leg before wicket. Lee finished with 3-27.
Bangladeshi opener Tamim Iqbal made 32 and Aftab Ahmed 31 but they needed 40 and 34 balls respectively. There were only nine fours and one six in their innings.
Hayden made off 73 not out off 48 balls with nine fours and three sixes. He reached his half-century off 31 balls, while Gilchrist was run out for 43 off 26 balls.
NZ beat India:
Johannesburg: Captain Daniel Vettori led from the front as New Zealand beat India by 10 runs in the Super Eight match in the Twenty20 World Championships today.
The left-arm spinner claimed 4-20, took a catch and effected a run out as the Kiwis, bowled out for 190, hit back to restrict India to 180-9. India failed to build on a blistering start by openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, who put on 76 for the first wicket from 35 balls. Sehwag struck 17-ball 40 containing six fours and two sixes, while Gambhir top-scored with 51 off 33 with five fours and two sixes.
But once Jacob Oram broke through by having Sehwag caught at mid-wicket, India lost their way and conceded wickets at regular intervals to hand New Zealand two points.
New Zealand’s victory was set up by the lower order, who plundered 78 runs in the last five overs after they were reduced to 112-5.
Brendon McCullum smashed 45 off 31 balls, before Craig McMillan (44) and Jacob Oram (35) bolstered the total by adding 73 in 33 balls for the sixth wicket. McMillan hit four sixes and Oram three. New Zealand lost four wickets in the final over.
South Africa win:
CAPE TOWN: South Africa beat Bangladesh by 7 wickets on Saturday with Graeme Smith and Albie Morkel each scoring 41 runs. The hosts ended with 146-3 in reply to Bangladesh’s 144 all out. Bangladesh lost wickets at regular intervals in an attempt to keep their run rate high. Aftab Ahmed smashed 36 off 14 balls with five fours and two sixes.
But the run rate came at a cost, with Bangladesh reduced to 101-6 and losing their last wicket with three balls left in the innings. Morne Morkel took 2-21.
Smith and JP Duminy started the reply cautiously. Smith’s 41 took 34 balls, while Duminy’s 36 came off 28 balls. Morkel set up the victory with 41 off 29 balls. Abdur Razzak was the best of the Bangladesh bowlers with 2-26.
