Barcelona beat Celta; Sevilla down Levante

Madrid, January 29:

FC Barcelona kept their slim lead over Sevilla in the Spanish league after a 3-1 win over Celta Vigo on Sunday. Javier Saviola, Ronaldinho and Ludovic Giuly each scored for the defending champions, who won for only the third time in their last eight league matches. Nene scored for Celta on a penalty after Barcelona defender Oleguer Presas was adjudged to have tripped Fernando Baiano.

Sevilla beat Levante 4-2, with Frederic Kanoute scoring his 16th goal of the season. Alexander Kerzhakov and Alejandro Alfaro also scored, while an own-goal by Levante midfielder Damiano Tommasi helped to end the UEFA Cup champions’ three-game winless streak.

Valencia’s run of six straight victories came to an end with a 2-1 defeat at struggler Real Betis.

Barcelona lead the league with 42 points, while Sevilla have 41. Real Madrid are next with 38 points, two more than Valencia and Atletico Madrid.

Also on Sunday, it was: Zaragoza 1, Deportivo La Coruna 1; Getafe 2, Osasuna 0; Mallorca 2, Recreativo Huelva 1; Real Sociedad 0, Athletic Bilbao 2; and Gimnastic Tarragona 4, Espanyol 0.

FA Cup

LONDON: Kolo Toure scored with a diving header to rescue Arsenal in a 1-1 draw with Bolton in the fourth round of the FA Cup. Chelsea moved into the last 16 of the competition with a 3-0 victory over League One team Nottingham Forest.

Kevin Nolan gave Bolton a 50th-minute lead at the Emirates Stadium, but Toure levelled in the 77th to force a replay at Reebok Stadium, where the Gunners lost 3-1 in the league on November 25.

Strikers Andriy Shevchenko and Didier Drogba scored for Chelsea within the first 18 minutes at Stamford Bridge and midfielder John Obi Mikel added a third in the 45th.

The Blues remain on course for a possible domestic cup double, playing the February 25 League Cup final against either Arsenal or Tottenham, who are level at 2-2 after the first leg of their semi-final match.

Manchester City rallied to beat League Championship team Southampton 3-1 with DaMarcus Beasley scoring the third goal. Kenwyne Jones gave Southampton a 23rd-minute lead, but Darius Vassell levelled the scores in the 26th minute. Joey Barton put the hosts up 2-1 in the 45th and Beasley added a third in the 70th.

In a meeting of two neighbours from the League Championship, West Bromwich Albion won 3-0 at Wolves to make it to the quarter-finals.

Italian Serie A

MILAN: Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Maicon both scored to help Inter Milan beat 10-man Sampdoria 2-0 and extend their Serie A record winning streak to 14.

Inter lead the league with 57 points, 11 more than second-place AS Roma, which beat Siena 1-0. Palermo are third with 39 points.

Also, Filippo Inzaghi scored to help AC Milan beat Parma 1-0 and maintain their push for fourth place. Milan are in ninth place with 27 points, three fewer than Lazio and Catania.

Also on Sunday, Takayuki Morimoto scored an 88th-minute equaliser to hand Catania a 1-1 draw with Atalanta; Luca Toni scored one and set up another as Fiorentina rallied to beat Livorno 2-1; Reggina beat Cagliari 2-0; Ascoli snatched a 2-1 victory over Messina; and Empoli was held to a 0-0 draw at Chievo Verona.
