Barcelona rally to beat Deportivo 2-1

Madrid, December 10:

Xavi Hernandez and Ronaldinho scored a goal each on Sunday to help FC Barcelona rally to beat Deportivo La Coruna 2-1 and stay in second place in the Spanish league.

Xavi poked in a loose ball in the 71st minute after Carles Puyol had tried to pick out Bojan Krkic with a centering pass from the right.

Ronaldinho scored the equaliser in the 40th after Cristian Gonzalez tripped up Andres Iniesta along his own goal line. Cristian had given Deportivo the lead in the third minute when Victor Valdes misjudged his long-range shot.

Real Madrid lead with 35 points from 15 games. Barcelona have 31, one more than Atletico Madrid, who beat Getafe 1-0 from Diego Forlan’s goal. Villarreal dropped to fourth with 28 points after losing 1-0 to Real Betis on a goal by Jesus “Capi” Capitan.

Ricardo Oliveira scored two goals in the last four minutes as Zaragoza rallied for a 3-3 draw against Espanyol. Raul Tamudo, Valmiro “Valdo” Lopez and Pablo Zapaleta had all scored for Espanyol within an eight-minute span after Diego Milito gave Zaragoza the lead in the sixth minute.

Also, it was: Racing Santander 3, Mallorca 1; Sevilla 3, Murcia 1; Levante 0, Recreativo Huelva 2; and Almeria 1, Valladolid 0.

Italian Serie A

ROME: Inter Milan routed Torino 4-0 and extended their lead at the top of the Serie A to five points. Zlatan Ibrahimovic converted a penalty in the 38th minute and Julio Ricardo Cruz, Luis Antonio Jimenez and Ivan Cordoba added second-half goals. Second-place AS Roma were held to a 1-1 draw at Livorno, where Daniele De Rossi scored for Roma in the fifth minute before Diego Tristan equalised a minute later.

Juventus and Udinese earned late wins. Pavel Nedved scored in the 86th minute in Juve’s 1-0 victory over Atalanta, and Fabio Quagliarella scored twice in the final 20 minutes to lead Udinese to a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Sampdoria. Inter lead with 37 points, followed by Roma with 32, Juventus with 29 and Udinese with 28.

Premiership

LONDON: Bolton beat Wigan 4-1 for their biggest win this season in the English Premier League. Earlier, Arsenal lost their first game this season, falling at Middlesbrough 2-1 to leave the Gunners with a one-point lead at the top. Tottenham defeated Manchester City 2-1 with a late goal from Jermain Defoe, and West Ham beat Blackburn 1-0. Arsenal lead with 37 points, followed by Manchester United (36) and Chelsea (34).
