Birmingham upset Newcastle

Birmingham upset Newcastle 5-1 to advance to the fourth round of the English FA Cup on Wednesday, while Fulham rallied to beat Leicester and Tottenham comfortably won in other third-round replays.

Birmingham got goals from five different players. Birmingham led 2-0 when Gary McSheffrey scored in the fifth minute and Newcastle’s Nolberto Solano conceded an own in the 45th. James Milner scored for Newcastle in the 56th but Bruno N’Gotty made it 3-1 in the 59th. Larsson scored in the 83rd and Campbell added fifth in the 89th.

Wayne Routledge scored in injury time to give Fulham a 4-3 victory. Gareth McAuley and James Wesolowski made it 3-1 for Fulham by the 47th minute before Vincenzo Montella scored twice nine minutes apart to pull Fulham into a 3-3 tie by the 60th.

Tottenham had goals from Aaron Lennon, Robbie Keane, Steed Malbranque and Jermain Defoe in its 4-0 win over Cardiff. The fourth round is set for January 26-27.

Italian Cup

MILAN: Inter Milan advanced to the semi-finals of the Italian Cup, beating Empoli 2-0.Esteban Cambiasso scored in the 28th minute and Fabio Grosso added the second in the 76th to send Inter to the next round with a 4-0 aggregate victory.

In the semi-finals, Inter will face Sampdoria, which beat Chievo Verona 2-1 to advance 3-1 on aggregate. Emiliano Bonazzoli and Gennaro Delvecchio scored for Sampdoria while Michele Marcolini replied for Chievo.

Also, David Pizarro scored a late equalizer to earn an understrength AS Roma a 2-2 draw with Parma. Roma progressed to the last four, winning 4-3 on aggregate. — AP
