Bohara wins Cross Country C’ship

Akkal Bahadur Bohara of APF completed the 12-km race in 44 minutes 30.42 seconds to win the seventh Thankot Cross Country Championship organised by Everest Athletics Club. Tshering Lama (45:12:99) of Nepal Police and APF’s Gagan Singh (45:50:81) finished second and third. In women’s 8-km race, Nirmala Bharati of Nepal Police (37:04:79); Krishneshwori Shitakala (38:05:59); and Bishnu Kafle (39:28:54) grabbed the top three spots. In all, 126 athletes, including 11 women runners took part in the event.
Singh lifts title
LALITPUR: Sudib Bahadur Singh defeated Ajay Singh 3-1 to clinch the Masters’ Open title at the Birthday Cup Open Squash Tournament. Dilip Adhikari finished third. Gyanu Chaudhari, Ken Wart and Binit Shrestha grabbed the top three spots in Men’s Novice section. In Men’s Plate semi-finals, Prem Singh beat Sushil Simkhada 3-0 and Ananta Singh beat Gaurav Katuwal 3-1. Bhavana Sunuwar finished first beating Krishna Thapa 3-0 whereas Kshitij Gurung came third in Women’s Open. Digvijay Singh, Pravin Gurung and Amrit Thapa came first, second and third respectively in Junior Boys’ Singles. The other finals are slated for Sunday.
DPS finish first
KATHMANDU: Dipendra Police School (DPS) finished first, followed by Malpi International School and Manju Goksha School at the fourth Gillette Inter-school Badminton Tournament. Kishor Rana beat Nibesh Tamrakar 17-14, 15-11 (Senior Boys’ Singles); Sajan Tamrakar beat Bijesh Tamrakar 16-14, 15-2 (Middle Boys’ Singles); Zenden Thakuri beat Shiru Shrestha
11-1, 11-7 (Middle Girls’ Singles); the duo of Kusum and Yamuna beat Zenden and Tshering 15-12, 15-9 (Girls’ Doubles); the duo of Nibesh and Nikita beat Geeta and Kishor 15-3, 11-15, 15-8 (Mixed Doubles); and the duo of Kishor and Sushil beat Rajesh and Milan 15-13, 11-15, 15-12 (Boys’ Doubles) to win their respective titles.
Wanderers win
KATHMANDU: Bijay Raj Ghale and Resham Thapa scored a goal each as NST Wanderers defeated Hero Honda Company 2-0 in the final of the Five-a-side Football Tournament organised by Nepal Sports Club. Earlier, NST Wanderers beat Nepal Sports Journalists Forum 4-1 and Hero Honda beat Royal Drugs 4-1 in the semi-finals. In all, eight teams took part in the one-day event.
Malla departs
LALITPUR: Nirajan Malla today left for Japan to take part in a three-week training to be conducted by Urawa Red Diamonds Academy in Saita city. ANFA president Ganesh Thapa bade farewell to the player. Malla became the first Nepali footballer to be selected by any Japanese club for training.
Gurung advances
LALITPUR: Karma Gurung entered the Veterans’ Singles pre-quarters with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Gaimbiorne Jaines at the Birthday Cup Tennis Tournament, which has been organised by All Nepal Lawn Tennis Association to mark the 59th birthday of King Gyanendra. Manoj Rana beat Shyam Thapa 6-1, 6-3; Chandra Man Tuladhar defeated Vijay Rai 6-4, 7-5; Chambha Dhondup rallied to beat Deepak Shrestha 6-7, 6-3, 10-6; Ganendra Tamrakar edged out Kumar Pradhan 6-0, 7-5; Prithvi Thakali routed Uttam Lama 6-1, 6-2; and Rajeev Parajuli beat Ramji Thapa 6-4, 7-5 to advance in the same section. In men’s doubles, Karma Ghale and Subha Ratna Shahi; Santosh Khatri and Sandeep Tamrakar; and Punny and Binay Shah entered the last 16. Saloni Pandey beat Pratibha Gurung 9-1 and Saloni Lama outplayed Kencho Lama 9-3 to enter the Sub-junior Girls’ (U-14) Singles pre-quarters.
