Boxer dies after bout

Jakarta, June 19 :

An Indonesian professional boxer has died after collapsing during a non-title fight over the weekend, officials said on Monday.

Fadly Kasim died on Sunday at a hospital in Manado, the provincial capital of North Sulawesi, said Haryo Yuniarto, an official at the Board of Development and Supervision of Professional Sports. Kasim, 22, collapsed on Saturday night just before the last of six rounds, the daily Kompas newspaper reported. He was rushed to the hospital, but died before doctors could help him.

It was Kasim’s first professional fight and there were no indications that he received potentially fatal blows in the first five rounds, Kompas reported. An investigation was launched to determine if organizers were liable for his death, the first in Indonesian boxing this year.

At least 19 boxers have died of the sport in Indonesia’s boxing history, Yuniarto said. In 2002, the World Boxing Council banned Indonesian boxers from fighting in WBC-sanctioned bouts outside the country following a series of deaths in 2001. The ban was lifted in July 2002 on the condition that Indonesia imposes safety rules and forms a commission to monitor matches.
