CAN gets new body under Pandey

Three ex-skippers included

Kathmandu, September 28 :

National Sports Council (NSC) today reformed the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) under the presidentship of Binay Raj Pandey ousting the committee headed by Jai Kumar Nath Shah, who has been the CAN president for the last five decades.

Pandey had also served CAN as secretary and vice president under Shah before then member secretary of NSC Kishor Bahadur Singh reformed the committee.

Former vice president Sri Harsha Koirala and Upendra Bhattarai, president of Baluwatar Cricket Academy, were brought in as the vice presidents of the committee. Other four vice presidents are Birendra Gurung, Basanta Lal Shrestha, Ramesh Silwal and Chatur Bahadur Chand, the only survivor from the previous body.

Damador Suwal — who was named the joint secretary in the former committee but resigned from the post — is named the general secretary, while former treasurer Sashi Pandey is the secretary. Chartered Accountant Tanka Paneru has been nominated as the treasurer.

The members of the committee are Tarak Mani Dixit, Prem Century, LB Chhetry, Pawan Agrawal, Krishna Lal Karna, Sailesh Adhikari, Binay Rajbhandari, Uttam Karmacharya and a representative from the NSC. Pawan Agrawal, Uttam Karmacharya and LB Chhetry are the former skippers of national team.

The newly formed committee held a meeting today and thanked National Sports Council for providing the opportunity to lead the CAN. According to Pandey, the committee expressed its condolence to the family of its former vice president Krishna Charan Shrestha, who was killed recently.

The meeting also formed a three-member management committee for the three-day match against Hong Kong under Asian Premier League slated for early October. “It’s a three-day match and we don’t need a huge committee,” he said. Secretary Sashi Pandey and members Tarak Mani Dixit and Binod Rajbhandari are in the committee for the match slated for early next month.

“The committee is favourable for me to work as most of the members are from the cricketing background,” said Pandey.

Asked about treasurer Paneru, the newly nominated president said that he was appointed by the NSC. “May be the sports council wants a neutral person to check and balance the accounts, which is in a bizzarre state at the moment,” said Pandey.
