Chelsea agree deal to sign Croatian starlet

LONDON: Carlo Ancelotti confirmed on Friday that Chelsea have reached an agreement with Croatian club Inter Zapresic that allows goalkeeper Matej Delac to join the Premier League club in 2011.

Chelsea are banned from signing any new players for the next two transfer windows after being found guilty of inducing French youngster Gael Kakuta to leave Lens for Stamford Bridge.

But the Blues are appealing the decision and Ancelotti believes FIFA, world football's governing body, are happy with the deal.

Delac, who till turn 18 next August, will remain with the Croatian club for the next two years, during which period Chelsea will pay his wages, and he will occasionally travel to London to train with the club.

Ancelotti said: "He is a young goalkeeper getting very good experience in his country and we think that he can be very good in the future.

"He will stay in Croatia to play next season and then come to play with us.

"I think FIFA are happy. He is very young and this is a solution for our future, not for the present.

"We put a lot of attention on the young players in every part of the world and if it is possible to take them, we want to do this."

Following a recent visit to Stamford Bridge, Bosnia-born Delac told the Sportske Novosti daily: "They've welcomed me as though I was (John) Terry or (Frank) Lampard."

Delac plays for Croatia's U-17 team, but national coach Slaven Bilic recently named him in his senior squad as third goalkeeper for their World Cup 2010 qualifiers against Belarus and England.

Back in London, Ancelotti, whose side host Tottenham on Sunday, has had to deal with the departure of former chief executive Peter Kenyon this week.

Former Chelsea chief operating officer Ron Gourlay has been installed as Kenyon's replacement, but Ancelotti is confident he can work with the new man as well as the club's sporting director Frank Arnesen.

"The role of Frank Arnesen is sporting director and he is working very close with me," Ancelotti said.

"I have a good relationship with him and we want to do the best for the club.

"Peter Kenyon did a very good job but I didn't know him very well. I spoke with him in the period that I've been here but he leaves a fantastic team and club and he worked very well for Chelsea."

Ancelotti has led Chelsea to five successive league wins since arriving from AC Milan, but the Italian has no intention of getting carried away ahead of the London derby against Tottenham.

"I have never seen an unbeatable team," said Ancelotti. "Chelsea is not unbeatable but we are doing well.

"I am not surprised by our start to this season. I had one month before the start of the season to know the players, their mental attitude and their quality.

"I know the rivalry between the two teams and how important this match is for the fans. We have to pay attention to this and we want to win.

"I saw Tottenham's last games and they have started very well. For me it was a surprise, they played very well against Liverpool and Manchester United.

"They lost that game but they have good style and quality players. In attack, Jermain Defoe is a very dangerous striker and Aaron Lennon is a very quick player."
