Chelsea beat West Bromwich

London, March 5:

Chelsea finished with 10 men in its 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion in the English Premier League — Jose Mourinho’s 100th game in charge. At the Hawthorns, Didier Drogba and Joe Cole scored for Chelsea. In between, Arjen Robben was sent off for a foul on Jonathan Greening.

Liverpool moved into outright second when it drew 0-0 with Charlton. Thierry Henry scored twice and Emmanuel Adebayor and Cesc Fabregas added the others in Arsenal’s 4-0 win over Fulham to lift it from seventh to fifth.

In other matches, it was: Aston Villa 1, Portsmouth 0; Middlesbrough 1, Birmingham 0; West Ham 2, Everton 2 and Newcastle 3, Bolton 1.

Chelsea has almost clinched back-to-back Premier League titles. The Blues have 75 points with 10 matches left. Liverpool is second with 55 points, followed by Manchester United with 54, Tottenham 46 and Arsenal 44.

Spanish La Liga

MADRID: Antonio Cassano and Julio Baptista scored first-half goals, and Real Madrid beat crosstown rival Atletico 2-1 in its first game since club president Florentino Perez resigned.

Madrid moved above Valencia into second place.

Atletico, for which Mateja Kezman scored in the 26th minute, ended its six-game winning streak and stayed without a win over Madrid since 1999.

In Saturday’s late game, leader Barcelona downed Deportivo La Coruna 3-2 on goals by Ronaldinho, Henrik Larsson and Samuel Eto’o to regain a 10-point advantage over Madrid.

Barcelona has 61 points, while Madrid has 51, Valencia 50 and Osasuna 46.

In other games, Juan Roman Riquelme scored twice as Villarreal edged Alaves 3-2 to rise to sixth place; and Cadiz beat Espanyol 2-0.

Italian Serie A

ROME: Pavel Nedved headed in a second-half winner and defending champion Juventus beat Sampdoria 1-0 to stay 10 points clear of second-place AC Milan.

Nedved scored off a long cross from Adrian Mutu in the 69th minute. Juve improved to 23 wins, four draws and one loss.

With 10 rounds to go, Juventus has 73 points. AC Milan, which scored three goals within 11 minutes to beat Empoli 3-0, has 63. Filippo Inzaghi scored two and Andriy Shevchenko added another between the 77th and 87th minutes.
