City lose perfect home record

Manchester, December 28:

Manchester City lost its perfect record at home in the English Premier League on Thursday when Blackburn rallied to draw 2-2.

Roque Santa Cruz scored the second of his two goals from a cross from David Bentley in the 84th minute for the equaliser. He also scored in the 28th minute to match the 27th-minute header from City striker Darius Vassell.

Manchester City went ahead in the 30th minute by an own-goal from Blackburn defender Ryan Nelsen. Santa Cruz’s equaliser initially was ruled offside by linesman Darren Cann, but referee Howard Webb — after discussing the matter with his assistant — overruled the decision and awarded the goal.

“He has been honest to admit he had got decision wrong,” Blackburn manager Mark Hughes said.

“He flagged initially for David Dunn, but he changed his mind and we’re absolutely delighted he was able to do that. In the past I’ve questioned officials, but on this occasion he was strong enough to change his mind.”

City, which had won its previous nine home league matches, missed the chance to move into fourth place and remained fifth with 35 points.

Blackburn improved to ninth position with 27 points. Manchester United lead with 45 points, followed by Arsenal with 44, Chelsea with 38 and Liverpool with 36 points.
