Costa given extra 1-game ban following red card

LONDON: Chelsea striker Diego Costa has been given a further one-game ban for his behavior that followed his sending-off in an FA Cup quarterfinal match against Everton last month.

The English Football Association announced the suspension on Friday, saying the Spain international player has also been fined 20,000 pounds ($28,500) and warned about his future conduct. Costa admitted to a charge of improper conduct at a disciplinary hearing.

Costa was suspended for two matches after receiving a red card — for the first time in his Chelsea career — against Everton. He picked up a second booking after thrusting his head at Gareth Barry before making a biting motion toward the midfielder's neck. Both players said there was no bite.

Costa confronted the referee before leaving the field.
