Cyclists bag two golds

Nepal won two gold medals in downhill events of cycling under the 13th South Asian Games here at the Martyrs Park in Gokarna today.

Nepali cyclists clean swept the men’s downhill event with Rajesh Magar winning the gold medal in one minute and 49.333 seconds. Nirav Shrestha came second in 1:50.080, while Prachit Thapa Magar was third in 1:51.661. A total of 14 cyclists took part in the one-kilometre downhill race.

In women’s section, Nishima Shrestha claimed gold with the timing of two minutes and 22.451 seconds, finishing ahead of teammate Jamuna Thapa (2:41.551). India’s Yashodhara Madhukar Sherkar claimed bronze in 3:37.238. A total of 10 cyclists from four countries took part in the event.

Table Tennis

KATHMANDU: Nepal added two more medals in table tennis.

Santoo Shrestha and Binesh Khaniya won bronze medal in men’s doubles event after they faced a 4-0 defeat against India.

The mixed doubles pair of Santoo Shrestha and Nabita Shrestha finished third following their 4-2 loss against India. Nepal had bagged silver medals in men and women team events on Tuesday.

Kho-Kho

KATHMANDU: Nepal won silver medal in women’s kho-kho at Nayabazaar covered hall in Kirtipur. Nepal faced a 17-5 defeat against India in the final.

Bangladesh won bronze after they beat Sri Lanka 10-7. In men’s section, India won gold beating Bangladesh 16-9, while Nepal finished third after beating Sri Lanka 13-7.

Football

KATHMANDU: Nepal played a 1-1 draw with Sri Lanka in men’s football tournament at the Dasarath Stadium. Skipper Sujan Shrestha put Nepal ahead from the spot in the 36th minute after Sri Lankan defender brought down Ananta Tamang inside the penalty box. At a time when the match was coming to its end, Sri Lanka found the equaliser in the injury time. Sebamalainayakam Jude Supan found the back of the nets in the third minute of the injury time to snatch a point for the team.

Nepal are at the top of the five-team table with four points, while Bhutan are second with three. Sri Lanka and Maldives have two each, while Bangladesh are at the bottom with one points. Top two sides will advance to final after the round robin league.
