Diouf helps Bolton beat Man City

Associated Press

London, March 8:

El-Hadji Diouf’s goal in first-half injury time gave Bolton a 1-0 win at Manchester City, moving Wanders into contention for a place next season in Europe. Diouf scored off a close-range cross from Stelios Giannakopoulos. Diouf’s goal came after a lackluster first half in which neither team looked threatening. City striker Robbie Fowler probably had his team’s best chance in the first half — and the match — when he shot high over the cross bar from close range with Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen out of position. Bolton improved to 43 points — the same as Liverpool in sixth place. Man City stayed in 12th place with 36 points. Chelsea leads the Premier League with 71 points followed by Manchester United (63) and Arsenal (61). Man City coach Kevin Keegan started US national team captain Claudio Reyna, who has missed most of the season with a leg injury. The American midfielder played the entire match, but was unable to provide much service up front to Fowler.

Rooney, Ferguson face FA probe

LONDON: Sir Alex Ferguson and Wayne Rooney are reportedly being investigated by the Football Association for their behaviour during Manchester United’s goalless draw at Crystal Palace. FA officials are studying footage when Ferguson clashed with referee Mark Clattenburg and fourth official Andy D’Urso and Rooney was booked for foul and abusive language, Daily Mail reported. As United face AC Milan in Tuesday night’s Champions League tie, it emerged the FA will also scrutinise Rooney’s conduct after the final whistle, when he had to be restrained during a confrontation with Clattenburg. There is a view within the game that Rooney needs to be disciplined for his persistent verbal attacks on referees. — AP
