Federer, Mauresmo advance

New York, August 31 :

Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Amelie Mauresmo played like champions and former winners Serena Williams and Martina Hingis also advanced at the US Open on Thursday.

Lleyton Hewitt, Marat Safin, and Andy Roddick won in straight sets. Roddick’s 6-3, 7-6 (3), 6-3 win over Kristian Pless of Denmark was Wednesday’s only second-round match. With 80 matches, the upsets were quite limited, with the biggest probably Anastasia Myskina’s 6-4, 6-2 loss to Victoria Azarenka of Belarus.

The top-seeded Federer beat Wang Yeu-Tzuoo of Taiwan 6-4, 6-1, 6-0. Aiming at his third straight Open title, Federer had won 55 straight matches on North American hard courts before Andy Murray beat him at the Cincinnati Masters.

Mauresmo led Kristina Barrois of Germany 6-1, 2-5 when their match was suspended on Tuesday. Mauresmo was sharp when they returned, winning all five games to close out a 6-1, 7-5 victory. Williams cruised, beating Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain 6-1, 6-2. Sharapova breezed to a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Michaella Krajicek. Hingis registered a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Peng Shuai.

Known for his success on clay, the second-seeded Nadal had an easy time on the hard court. He beat Mark Philippoussis 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round.

Safin defeated Robin Vik of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Safin has exhibited some bizarre behavior in the past but won in rather routine fashion.

The 15th-seeded Hewitt, the 2001 US Open champion, beat Albert Montanes of Spain 7-5, 6-4, 6-3; No 4 David Nalbandian defeated Michael Berrer of Germany 4-6, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 7-5, 6-2; No 5 James Blake needed six match points to finish off Juan Monaco of Argentina 6-3, 7-5, 7-6 (7); and No 7 Nikolay Davydenko rallied past Ramon Delgado of Paraguay 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-0.

Other notables advancing were No 10 Fernando Gonzalez, No 12 Tomas Berdych, No 14 Tommy Haas, No 17 Murray, No 18 Robby Ginepri, Tim Henman, and French Open winners Carlos Moya, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Gaston Gaudio.

Women reaching the second round included No 5 Nadia Petrova of Russia, No 12 Dinara Safina, No 13 Mary Pierce, a two-time major winner and last year’s Open runner-up, No 16 Ana Ivanovic and No 17 Daniela Hantuchova.
