Federer, Nadal move on; Blake, Hewitt lose

Top-ranked Roger Federer put away Sebastien Grosjean 6-3, 6-3 in the second round of the Rogers Cup on Wednesday and won his 50th straight match in North America.
Defending champion Rafael Nadal defeated Lee Hyung-taik of South Korea 6-4, 6-3. Nadal take on Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic in the third round.
Fifth-seeded James Blake and seventh-seeded Tommy Robredo both exited, leaving only three of the top 10 seeds. Richard Gasquet of France upset Blake 6-4, 6-3. Robredo was undone by Argentine Jose Acasuso 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
No 4-seeded Ivan Ljubicic defeated France’s Arnaud Clement 7-6 (6), 6-4. Thomas Johansson advanced when Lleyton Hewitt retired while trailing 6-3, 3-2 with a right knee injury. Fernando Gonzalez of Chile, Carlos Moya of Spain and Berdych breezed into the round of 16. Gonzalez defeated Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain 6-2, 6-1.
Moya beat Denis Gremelmayr of Germany 6-1, 6-4, and Berdych downed Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 7-6 (3), 6-4.

CARSON: Lindsay Davenport’s comeback ended with a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-3 loss to Australian Samantha Stosur in the JPMorgan Chase Open on Wednesday. Top-seeded Maria Sharapova routed Anastassia Rodionova of Russia 6-3, 6-1. After Rodionova earned her only break of the match at 3-2 in the first set, Sharapova broke twice, losing just three points on her serve in the set.
Serena Williams continued her comeback, beating fellow American Ashley Harkleroad 6-3, 6-2 in a second-round match. She will face seventh-seeded Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, a 7-6 (2), 6-2 winner over Lisa Raymond.
