Federer through, Nadal retires

Top-ranked Roger Federer downed French qualifier Julien Benneteau 6-3, 6-3 to cruise into the third round of the Cincinnati Masters.

Other top seeds did not fare so well, with No 2 Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic marking a day of upsets and injuries. Nadal retired while trailing 7-6 (5), 4-1 against Juan Monaco of Argentina. Fourth-seeded Djokovic fell to Carlos Moya 6-4, 6-1.

Australian Lleyton Hewitt was leading 6-1, 3-2 when Richard Gasquet retired.

Juan Carlos Ferrero beat Fernando Gonzalez 6-2, 7-6 (7); Nicolas Almagro beat Ivan Ljubicic 6-4, 6-4; Sam Querry beat Mikhail Youzhny 5-7, 6-3, 6-4; David Ferrer beat Radak Stepanek 6-2, 7-5; James Blake beat Nicolas Kiefer 6-4, 6-4; and Nikolay Davydenko beat Robby Ginepri 6-2, 6-7 (7), 6-3.

Rogers Cup

TORONTO: China’s Yan Zi upset Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 6-1 and eliminated the defending champion in the second round of the Rogers Cup. Ivanovic the No 4 seed was stunned by the 169th-ranked player, capping a day of upsets that also claimed fifth-seeded Anna Chakvetadze and No 8 Elena Dementieva.
