GENEVA: International footballers’ union FIFPro says it will help Germany’s most successful Winter Olympian pay legal costs in a doping case. FIFPro praises five-time Olympic speedskating champion Claudia Pechstein, whose two-year ban for blood doping expired in 2011, for showing “admirable patience and dedication.” A German regional court ruled in January that Pechstein could seek $4.85 million compensation from the International Skating Union. FIFPro also attacks alleged unfairness at the Court of Arbitration of Sport, which upheld the ISU’s ruling that Pechstein was guilty. FIFPro and Pechstein claim the structure of sport’s highest court is biased against athletes in favor of governing bodies. Matthieu Reeb, the CAS secretary general, responds with “disbelief” at FIFPro after their recent cooperation to include more independent arbitrators in the court’s work.
