Gautam, Chandrakala qualify
Kathmandu, February 29:
Purna Bahadur Gautam of Nepali Army and Chandrakala Thapa of Nepal Police won the 100m races to get selected for the upcoming South Asian Senior Athletics Championship, at the Dasharath Stadium today.
A total of 10 athletes — winners of the 10 events in the qualifying tournament organised by Nepal Amateur Athletics Association — qualified for the championship slated for March 7-9 in Kerala, India.
Gautam won the men’s 100m race in 10.94 seconds, while Thapa completed the distance in 1.96 seconds to win the women’s section gold medal.
Yogendra Dhimal of Nepali Army jumped 6.61 metres earning a chance to represent the country in Long Jump, while fellow teammate Uttam Khatri won the 10,000m race in 31 minutes 42.40 seconds. Dhirendra Jung Shah of Nepali Army won the Javelin Throw gold at 61.63m, while Bal Krishna Chaudhary of APF jumped 1.91m to win the High Jump bettering his personal best of 1.90 metres. Sabitri Nepal of Nepal Police won the women’s 400m race in 1:03.98 seconds, while her teammate Chhaya Khatri clinched 800m gold in 2:29.17 seconds.
Also qualifying were Surya Maya Rai of APF (women’s 1,500m) in 5:09.17, Krishneshwori Sintakala (women’s 5,000m) in 14:06.50.
