Euro ‘96 launched the careers of a golden generation of Czech players and triggered the first mass exodus of Czechs to major European leagues. The Czech Republic started the tournament in England as the undisputed outsider, with the majority of squad members still based in the domestic league and only seven playing abroad, most of them in the German Bundesliga. It only lost to the Germans on an extra time “golden goal” in the final.
