Golden Gate thrash Warriors

Kathmandu, January 16:

Sushil Gurung top-scored with 30 points as Golden Gate Club thrashed Naya Bazaar Warriors 104-22 in the men’s section match at the Trinity National Basketball Tournament here today.

In other men’s section matches, Unique Group defeated Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) 55-25; Prime Sports Club beat Revolver Group 59-52; and Trinity Club outplayed Reunited 76-54.

Golden Gate dominated the Warriors through out the match and scored in three figures. The defending champions opened up a 16-point lead in the first quarter when they scored 18 points, while the Warriors just managed to open the basket. Golden Gate extended their lead to 40 points in the second quarter and the margin widened to 61 points by the end of the third quarter. Golden Gate scored 27 and 25 in the second and third quarters, while Warriors netted three and four.

Golden Gate exploited the last quarter and netted 34 points whereas the Warriors managed just 13. Sushil Gurung, the highest scorer of the match with 30 points, hit five three-pointers out of the team’s total of nine.

TAC were beaten by Unique Group in their second match. Unique managed a 18-6 lead in the first quarter and extended it 19 points when they scored 12 restricting the TAC to just five by the end of the half time. Unique scored eight and 17 in the next two quarters, while the Armymen managed nine and 15. Rajeev Shakya scored 24 points for the winners.

Prime Sports Club edged past Revolver Group. The match went neck-to-neck till the last quarter when Prime outplayed Revolver. In the competitive first quarter, Prime scored 18 and Revolver netted 17, while Revolver took one-point lead after the second quarter scoring 10 to Prime’s eight. Revolver extended the lead to two points in the third quarter when they scored 12 and Prime netted 11. In the last quarter, Prime played like champions and scored 22 points restricting Revolver to 13. Ravi Giri scored 24 points for the winners.

Likewise, Trinity dominated Reunited through out the match. Trinity scored 19, 21, 14 and 22 points in four quarters, while Reunited netted 13, 13, 11 and 17. Karna Sonam of Reunited scored 20 points and Binod Maharjan of Trinity netted 14 points.

In the only women’s section match of the day, Rato Bangala outplayed Naag Sports Club 59-35 riding on Sitashma Chand’s 15 points. Rato Bangala took a 15-point lead in the first quarter scoring 18 points, while the second quarter saw Rato Bangala scoring 14 and Naag Sports Club netting 15. The defending champions virtually claimed the victory by the end of the third quarter when they scored 21 points restricting their opponents to just eight. In the last quarter, Naag scored nine and Rato Bangala managed six.
