Golden Gate, Trinity set championship clash

Kathmandu, January 26:

Golden Gate Club and Trinity Club set title clash after winning their men’s semi-final matches at the Trinity National Basketball Championship here today.

Defending champions Golden Gate overcame Unique Group 75-55 while debutant Trinity saw off White House 83-57 here at the National Sports Council covered hall. On Sunday, defending champions Rato Bangala and Prime Sports Club made it to the women’s section final.

In the first semi-final, Golden Gate ensured they advance to the final after accumulating massive points in the first and third quarters. The defending champions scored 24 and gave away just nine points in the first quarter.

Unique reduced their deficit to nine points netting 15 against nine of their opponents in the second quarter. But Golden Gate came up strong in the third session scoring 25 while containing Unique to 13. The last quarter saw Golden Gate add further 17 to that of 18 of their opponents. Bipendra Maharjan of Golden Gate and Rajesh Shakya of Unique both scored 19 points.

In the other semi-final, Trinity ran off to a 15-point lead by the half time. Trinity scored 15 and 25 while White House managed 12 and 13 in the first two quarters. Although, White House (20) scored one point more than Trinity (19) in the third quarter, they could only score half the Trinity (24) points in the final quarter. Ajay Manandhar of the losing team top scored in the match with 16 points while Bikram Joshi contributed 13 for Trinity.

Finals of both the men’s and women’ section are scheduled for Tuesday at the same venue.
