India crush B’desh, win Test series 1-0

Dhaka, May 27:

Fast bowler Zaheer Khan took seven wickets to back up some prolific batting as India crushed Bangladesh by an innings and 239 runs with two days to spare in the second and final Test on Sunday.

Man of the match Khan took 5-34 in Bangladesh’s first innings and 2-54 off in the second after India’s four top batsmen smashed centuries on the second day to build a daunting first innings total of 610-3 declared. India won the two-match Test series 1-0 adding to a 2-0 win the in the three-match ODI series.

Despite spirited half centuries by Mohammad Ashraful (67) and Mashrafee Bin Mortaza (70), Bangladesh were dismissed for 253 in their second innings after being forced to follow on when they collapsed to 118 in the first innings.

Bangladesh lost the first three wickets of the second innings for 10 runs, before Rajin Saleh (42) and Ashraful (67) steaded with a quick 81-run partnership. Ashraful faced 26 balls to record Test cricket’s second fastest half century, and brought up 67 runs off 41 balls with 12 boundaries and two sixes.

Mortaza hit 70 off 68 balls with eight boundaries and three sixes, before wicketkeeper Mohindra Dhoni caught him off a Tendulkar ball to end Bangladesh’s series.

Resuming at 58-5, the hosts lasted 21.2 overs and added just 60 runs as their first innings crumbled. Shakib al Hasan failed to add to his overnight score of 30 after Khan trapped him leg before in the very first over of the day. Anil Kumble (3-32, 2-72) then trapped up Mohammad Sharif for 13, while Ishant Sharma earned his first Test wicket when Mashrafee Bin Mortaza (2) was caught by Kumble.

In India’s innings, opener Dinesh Karthik hit 129, Wasim Jafar retired hurt at 138, captain Dravid made 129 and Tendulkar was unbeaten on 122 when India declared shortly after tea on the second day.
