Robben eyes United

BERLIN: Dutch winger Arjen Robben scored the wonder goal which put Bayern Munich in the German Cup final and then said he hopes to carry his form into Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Manchester United. After Wednesday’s Cup semi-final against Schalke 04 was heading to penalties, with the scores tied at 0-0 after 90 minutes, Robben scored a world-class goal on 112 minutes in extra-time. Having cut in from the right wing, Robben dribbled around the Schalke defence before unleashing an unstoppable shot past Royal Blues’ goalkeeper Manuel Neuer which put his side into the May 15 final against Werder Bremen.

Mourinho sits out

ROME: Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho will continue to boycott pre-match press conferences ahead of this weekend’s crunch clash with AS Roma, his team said on Thursday. Mourinho has skipped his press appointments before and after matches for the last five Serie A encounters since he was hit with a three-game touchline ban for making a handcuffs gesture to TV cameras. The former Chelsea boss made the sign during his team’s 0-0 draw at home to Sampdoria last month, after Inter had been reduced to nine men before the break. The Portuguese’s only public comments have come before and after Champions League matches.

Dozens held for probe

ISTANBUL: Turkish police questioned dozens of football players and managers today in connection with a fresh probe into match fixing, officials and media reports said.The Turkish Football Federation confirmed that an investigation was under way, but said it was not related to a Europe-wide match-fixing scandal involving Turkey that erupted last year. Istanbul police chief Huseyin Capkin said 46 suspects had been detained on Wednesday in 26 provinces. One suspect was released after questioning late on Wednesday.
