Kathmandu win regional title

Kathmandu, April 1:

Kathmandu district won the Wai Wai U-19 Region-3 (Kathmandu) Selection Cricket Tournament on Sunday after their three wins in three league matches.

Lalitpur finished runners up in the event participated by four districts — Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur and Nuwakot.

In the last league match held at the Tribhuvan University Stadiums, Nuwakot registered a 30-run win over Bhaktapur. Batting first, Nuwakot were bowled out for 180 in 38.1 overs. In reply, Bhaktapur mustered only 150 in 32.2 overs.

Lower order batsman (No 8) Ritesh Singh played a match-winning knock for Nuwakot with his superb 54-ball 76. Singh’s innings included 10 fours and two sixes. Rom Shrestha was the only other major contributor with 28 runs. Suraj Shakya completed a five-wicket haul (5-35) in his eight-over spell for Bhaktapur. Robin Joshi claimed two while Eden Bhatta, Kabi Khagi and Prabin Joshi took one wicket each.

Opener Robin Joshi fought a lonely battle in Bhaktapur’s run chase. Joshi scored 69 runs off 80 deliveries as wickets fell in regular intervals at the other end. Any hopes of winning the match withered when Joshi was dismissed at 129-6 in the 26.1 overs.

Rajesh Shrestha took four and Birat Man Singh Dangol claimed three wickets for Nuwakot. Rom Shrestha and man of the match Ritesh Singh also pocketed one wicket each.

Gyanendra Malla of Kathmandu was adjudged the best batsman while Ujjwol Shrestha of

Lalitpur was declared the best bowler of the tournament.

President of Cricket Association of Nepal Binay Raj Pandey gave away the prizes.
